New works: A trip to Nyngan

These works below have been inspired by a quick roadtrip to Nyngan, in central NSW. I was lucky enough to be the passenger, not driver(!) on the drive (12 hours each way!), so I got to take lots of photos of the surrounding landscape, just shooting pics out the car window. It had just rained in the preceding weeks, and the generally dry outback land was actually beautiful and green for our trip.

On the way home, No. 5.

The beautiful rolling hills of Maleny come alive after summer rain, and the clean, clear air in the Maleny hills allows an expansive view of the Glasshouse Mountains in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Evolution of a painting

20180830_125738

I like to start with a coloured canvas, just done using acrylic paint. The coloured background adds more interest to the final painting when there are hints of colour peeping through the brushstrokes.

20180830_135057

Next, I rough in the main features of the painting, using diluted oil paint. In this case I am working from a photo as a reference.

20180830_145438

I then start the real painting! In this case, I am working on the main features first, and the larger areas that don’t need a lot of detail.

20180831_135723(0)

The work is done in stages, with the large areas that don’t need a lot of detail are painted first, then later the details and more finicky areas are painted.

After all the details are added and the painting finished, the final step is to sign the artwork in the bottom right corner.

The completed work!
